A Beginner’s Guide to Cooking with Organic Millets

New to millets? Start here. How to wash, soak, and cook organic millets in 20 minutes. Easy swaps for rice, roti, and upma — the farm way.

Millets Are Just Grains. Your Grandparents Ate Them Daily.

Bajra roti in winter. Ragi mudde with ghee. We didn’t call them “superfoods” then. They were just food.

Millets grow with little water, need no chemicals, and fill you up without making you sleepy. At Organic Options Farms, we grow them in real soil, sun-dry them, and skip the polish. What you get is grain + nutrition, nothing stripped away.

How to Cook Any Millet in 3 Steps

Step 1: Wash

Take 1 cup millet. Rinse 2–3 times. Millets have a natural layer that can taste bitter. Washing fixes it.

Step 2: Soak

Soak for 20 minutes. Makes it cook faster and easier on the stomach.

Bajra is the only exception — soak overnight.

Step 3: Cook

Water ratio: 1 cup millet : 2.5 cups water

Boil water, add soaked millet + a pinch of salt. Simmer 12–15 minutes with the lid on. Turn off, rest 5 minutes. Fluff it. Done. That’s it.

Pressure cooker: 1 cup millet : 2 cups water. 1 whistle, then 5 minutes on low.

Four Ways to Eat Millets This Week — No New Recipes Needed

  • Monday lunch: Little Millet + dal + sabzi. Same plate, just swap the rice.
  • Tuesday breakfast: Foxtail Millet upma. Cook like rava upma, but use millet.
  • Wednesday dinner: Ragi dosa. 1 cup ragi flour + ½ cup rice flour + water + salt. Ferment 2 hours, make dosa.
  • Sunday comfort: Kodo Millet khichdi. Millet + moong dal + haldi + ghee. Light on the stomach, heavy on taste.

Why “Organic” Matters With Millets

Supermarket millet is polished till it’s white. That shine means the fiber and B-vitamins are gone.

Organic Options Farms millets are unpolished. Dull color, full nutrition. Grown without chemicals, so you don’t have to wash away pesticides.

You’ll feel the difference: no bloating, energy that lasts, and sugar that doesn’t spike and crash.
